The Lead: Josh Freund scored 30 points to lead Roanoke to an 83-77 ODAC win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
How it Happened
- With the score tied at 13 just eight minutes into the game, RC used an 8-2 run and took a 21-15 advantage on a Caleb Jordan bucket with 8:47 left on the clock.
- VWU scored the next eight points, jumping on top 23-21 on a Lamont Steward three-pointer.
- The lead would change hands six times in the final six minutes of the first half, with the last lead change coming when Steward hit a half-court shot as time expired to give the Marlins a 39-37 advantage at the break.
- Roanoke came out and opened the second-half with a 17-6 run, pushing ahead 54-45 following a three-point play by Eli Sumpter with 15:15 to go in the game.
- VWU responded with a 13-1 run over the next three minutes to go back in front 58-55 before Freund tied the game with a three-point play of his own with 11 minutes remaining
- With the score tied at 67 with just under six minutes to go, RC scored nine of the next 12 points with a C.J. Miles layup giving the Maroons a 76-70 edge with 2:34 remaining.
- The Marlins cut the lead to 76-74 with just under two minutes to go but Freund scored another three-point play to put RC back in front by five. The Maroons would get a defensive stop on the other end to put the game away.
- Freund finished with 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the win. Miles had 14 points, while Jordan and Joe Mikalauskas finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
- VWU was led by Steward who had 22 points, R.J. Nicholson had 18 points off the bench and Corey White Jr. had 10.
Up Next: Roanoke will host Guilford on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in conference play.
