The Lead: Roanoke fell in the ODAC Men's Basketball Championship game on Sunday to Emory & Henry by the score of 72-70. Roanoke, which was making its first tournament finals appearance since 2007, closes its season with 20 wins (20-8) for the first time since 2000-01 season.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke found themselves down 18-6 less than six minutes into the game when John Shelor knocked down a jumper.
  • RC scored the next 10 points, pulling to within two at 18-16 after a pair of free-throws from C.J. Miles.
  • The Wasps again were able to build a double-digit lead pushing ahead 38-27 on a three-pointer by Shelor with just 4:04 to go in the half.
  • A layup by Josh Freund with 3:48 left made the score 38-29 and sparked what would prove to be an 13-0 run by the Maroons to close the half. The run was capped by a Miles layup with under a minute to go that sent the teams to the locker room with RC up 40-38.
  • With RC up 46-40 following a Freund jumper, the Wasps used a 12-2 run to take a 52-48 lead with 14:20 to play.
  • With the score 59-55, E&H strung together a 9-2 run, taking a 68-57 lead on a Chase Branscomb bucket with just over nine minutes to play in the game.
  • RC rallied with a 13-0 run taking the lead 70-68 on a driving layup by Jorden Davis with 49 seconds remaining.
  • On E&H's ensuing possession, Branscomb missed a layup that was rebounded by Alic Wynn who kicked the ball out to Colin Molden who knocked down a three-pointer to give the Wasps a 71-70 lead with 27 seconds to play.
  • On the other end of the floor, Freund was unable to convert a jumper and E&H snared the rebound.
  • After Roanoke was forced to foul the Wasps six times before Branscomb went to the line. Branscomb converted the first but missed the second giving RC a chance to set up one last play with 3.4 seconds on the clock.
  • Out of a timeout, RC was able to advance the ball up court but Freund's three-point attempt went in-and-out of the basket to give E&H the win.
  • Freund led RC with 20 points and 11 rebounds on his way to all-tournament team honors.  Davis tied a career-high with 19 points, while Miles who was an all-tournament team selection, finished with 10 points along with Colton Reed.
  • Branscomb (29 pts.) and Shelor (24 pts.) combined for 53 of Emory & Henry's 72 points. Branscomb was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and Shelor was named to the all-tournament team. Wynn finished with a game-high 14 rebounds.
