Roanoke Prevails with 2-0 win over Greensboro in Season-Opener
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke's offense came alive in the second half and held on for a 2-0 season-opening victory over Greensboro at Kerr Stadium this evening. The Maroons are 1-0 while the Pride drop to 0-1 on the young season.
Just five minutes into the second half, Jordan Troyer (Columbia, SC, The Hammond School)found Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington)in the box as the midfielder netted his first goal of the season to give his team a 1-0 lead. With just under 15 minutes remaining, the Maroons got an insurance goal from Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)off an assist from Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley)to ensure their first win over the Pride since 2002.
Roanoke held an advantage on shots, 8-7 while Greensboro had seven corner kicks to the Maroons' four. Mazi Heydary had two saves for the Pride while freshman goalkeeper Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)finished with one in his first collegiate game.
The men will host the 2009 Roanoke Invitational Sept. 4-5 at Kerr Stadium. Roanoke will host Philadelphia Bible followed by the Bridgewater/Ohio Northern contest which will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday's contests will be the Maroons battling ONU following the PBU/Bridgewater match-up at 5 p.m.
