Roanoke Gets Revenge with 3-0 win over Ferrum
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Ferrum, 3-0 this evening in men's soccer action at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in non-conference action. The Maroons avenged a 1-0 loss last season to the Panthers and improved to 3-0-1 on the season. The Panthers dropped to 1-2 overall.
Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)pushed his scoring streak to three games, this time for a season-best two goals in the victory. By the end of the night he finished with a school-record 12 shots, including five on goal to lead the Maroons.
Collins scored both goals in the first half, including the game-winner early in the 27th minute off an assist from Andrew Markey (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring). It was Markey's first assist of the season.
Collins' second goal was a 30-yard blast from the left side that was out of the goalkeeper's reach to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.
Two minutes later, Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford)scored from the top of the 18' to give him his first goal of the season and the Maroons a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the half.
Roanoke outshot Ferrum, 34-4, including 11-3 shots on goal. Roanoke even outshot their opponents, 21-1 in the first half which produced all three goals. They also held a 13-0 advantage on corner kicks, 9-0 in the opening period.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)finished with three saves for the Maroons while Ferrum's Chris Taylor stopped eight on the night.
The men travel to New Jersey to play in the Cialella Soccer Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden. They play Medaille (NY) Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:15 p.m. The following evening they take on Rutgers-Camden at 7:15 p.m.
