Roanoke Soars Past Bridgewater, 9-1
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored three first-half goals and never looked back as they defeated Bridgewater, 9-1 in ODAC men's soccer action at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improved to 5-1-2, 2-0 in the ODAC while the Eagles dropped to 1-7, 0-1 in their conference-opener.
The Maroons, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA South Atlantic Region poll, dominated the contest, as they out-shot the Eagles, 26-8, including 15-4 in the second half and held a 14-3 advantage on shots on goal.
Roanoke, who is now 19-1 all-time against the Eagles, tied the 1983 and 2008 teams for the most goals scored in the series. The 9-1 result was the same as last seasons' meeting in Harrisonburg.
Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley), Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)and Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River)led the offensive attack for Roanoke as they combined for seven of the nine goals on the night. For Sarmadi, it was first hat-trick of his career and Travelini had his first multi-goal game of his career. Collins improved his season goal total to a team-best eight on the season, one shy of tying his 2008 total.
In the 51st minute, Jon Marc Winchester (Greensboro, NC, Leesville)got a great feed from Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)and his shot sailed into the left side of the net to make it 7-0. His goal came in the midst of a second-half offensive explosion, as five goals were scored in a span of nearly seven minutes to start the period.
Senior Jeff Bobish (Pittsburgh, PA, Sewickley Academy)and sophomore Brooks Allison (Salem, VA, Salem)hooked up for the second time in their careers as Bobish sent a shot from 35-yards out into the top corner with 15-seconds remaining for the last goal of the game.
Travelini led Roanoke with six shots, three on goal as he also added an assist. Sarmadi had five shots, four on goal as he surpassed his 2008 scoring total with six goals this season. Collins added four shots, three on goal along with his second assist of the year in the win.
Shane O'Donnell led the Eagles with four shots, two on goal. Ryan Morgan's goal came in the 60th minute as he finished with two shots, one on goal. Adam Riner had two shots as well for Bridgewater.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville), Tyler Rinko (Maple, Glenn, PA, Upper Dublin)and Casey Shotts (Virginia Beach, VA, Princess Anne)all appeared in goal for the Maroons, as Russell finished with two-first-half saves. Bridgewater's Travis Morris and Jack Bottoms had four and one save, respectively.
The men will take on #11 Salisbury in a South Atlantic region showdown at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are 6-6 all-time against the Sea Gulls, who are currently 6-0 on the season. All but two meetings in the series have been decided by one goal. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
