Stark's Late Goal Lifts Maroons over Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2 in Men's Soccer
SALEM, Va. --- Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville)scored off a header with a minute remaining to lift Roanoke past Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 6-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC. The Marlins dropped to 6-2-1, 2-1 in conference play.
Stark's late goal came off Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School)corner kick that went into the left side past the goalkeeper with :55 seconds left to avenge last season's ODAC Championship game loss to the Marlins. This was the fourth win in the last five outings against Virginia Wesleyan.
Standley scored his first goal of the season off a free kick from 30-yards out to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead with three minutes remaining in the half.
With :45 seconds remaining in the half, Virginia Wesleyan's Josh Christian tied the contest at 1-1 heading into the second half.
Roanoke bounced back to regain the lead just seven minutes into the second half to make it, 2-1. Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford)pass found Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River)as his shot went past the Marlin goalkeeper and into the back of the net for his first career goal.
Virginia Wesleyan responded back quickly just two minutes later thanks to a Lonni Carter goal. His shot deflected off a Roanoke defender and slipped past goalkeeper Tyler Rinko (Maple, Glenn, PA, Upper Dublin)to tie the score once again at 2-2.
Though being out-shot, 16-8, Roanoke held the shots on goal lead, 6-5. The Marlins held a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Rinko picked up his first career win, making three saves for the Maroons. Virginia Wesleyan's Ryan Zmuda also finished with three saves in defeat.
The men return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as they battle south region foe North Carolina Wesleyan in non-conference action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
