Roanoke Men's Soccer Ranked Fifth in NCAA South Atlantic Regional Rankings
Roanoke College men's soccer is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA South Atlantic Regional Rankings announced this morning. The Maroons are currently 11-3-3 on the season.
The men are currently atop the ODAC Standings with a 7-0 mark entering this weekend. If the Maroons win out, they will host throughout the ODAC Tournament during the first week of November. Fellow ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan is also in the poll, ranked sixth with a 10-3-2 record.
Roanoke has a 10-2-3 in-region record with its only losses coming to then #11 ranked Salisbury (1-0) and to #1 Christopher Newport, 2-1 in Newport News, VA. Both losses came in a span of three days. They have tied with then #11 Ohio Northern (1-1), which is ranked in their respective regional poll. The Maroons third loss of the season came to Medaille (NY), 1-0. The Mavericks are currently 13-2-2 overall and are atop their conference with a 7-0-1 mark.
Senior Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)leads the Maroons with nine goals and three assists for 21 points on the season. He is followed by Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley), who has totaled eight goals for 16 points in addition to three game-winners. Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)has four goals and a team-high five assists. Goalkeeper Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)has been strong in his first collegiate season, collecting 29 saves while allowing only three goals for a 0.29 goals against average. He has also put up six shutouts on the season.
Head coach Scott Allison, which is in his 24th year at the helm for the Maroons men's soccer program, has racked up his 16th 10-win season with a 4-0 win over Randolph on Oct. 14. It is the third-straight 10-win season for the program.
The Maroons will celebrate senior day on Saturday, Oct. 24 against Eastern Mennonite. They will recognize Jeff Bobish (Pittsburgh, PA, Sewickley Academy), Collins, Tim Dunn (Towson, MD, Towson), Johnston and Sarmadi before the start of the match. Game time is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
