Late PK Goal by Collins Lifts Roanoke over EMU, 1-0 in ODAC Quarterfinals
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke needed some magic late in the second half to escape with a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinals Saturday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons continue their season as they improved to 12-5-3 and will advance to the ODAC Semifinals. The Royals end their season with a 7-7-5 mark.
Jon Marc Winchester (Raliegh, NC, Leesville)dribbled in the box as a foul was called which set up a penalty kick opportunity for Roanoke with five minutes remaining. Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)scored his 10th goal of the season which gave the Maroons the win and his second game-winner. The win ends a two-game skid for the Maroons.
Roanoke out-shot EMU, 23-3, including 14-0 in the second half and 7-1 in shots on goal. They held a slight edge, 4-2 in corner kicks. Roanoke is now 36-13-3 against EMU, 5-3 in post-season matches. It also avenged a 2-1 defeat dealt by Michael Leap and the Royals a week ago.
Collins led Roanoke with five shots, two on goal, followed by Winchester with four on the night. Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital), Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)and Jordan Troyer (Columbia, SC, The Hammond School)added three shots for the Maroons.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)finished with one save in goal for the Maroons. Dillon Brunk collected six saves for the Royals.
The men will travel to Virginia Beach this Wednesday, Nov. 4 to take on Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC Semifinals. The Maroons, who are 1-1 all-time in the ODAC Tournament, are 15-21-1 against the Marlins, 5-5 in the ODAC Tournament. Game time will be determined by Monday morning.
