Last Minute Goal Lifts Roanoke Past Methodist

SALEM, Va--- Roanoke needed a last-minute goal in the second overtime period to defeat Methodist, 1-0 Saturday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons, winners of the 2010 Roanoke Invitational for the second year in a row, now stand 3-0 on the year. Methodist fell to 2-1 on the young season.

The Maroons are now 6-1 in their last seven meetings against the Monarchs, including 4-0 in the Roanoke Invitational over the last two years.

Peyton Lambert (Chesapeake, VA, Western Branch) found a streaking Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville) for the game-winner with just 25-seconds to play. The Maroons had two goals taken away due to off sides calls earlier in the contest.

Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) and Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School) posted four shots while Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford) and AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) registered three shots on the night. The defense of Cameron Lee (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River), Ryan and Standley produced their third-straight shutout of the season.

Roanoke outshot Methodist, 28-15 and held an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. They were able to overcome a 9-7 deficit in fouls called throughout the contest.

Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) picked up his second win for the Maroons, recording seven saves in goal, while Kyle Beach took the loss for the Monarchs with nine saves.

Roanoke will take on Eastern Mennonite Tuesday, September 11th in Harrisonburg, Va. in its ODAC-Opener. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
