Roanoke's Season Ends on Penalty Kicks in ODAC Quarterfinals
SALEM, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney escaped Roanoke, 3-2 on penalty kicks after a scoreless 110-minutes in ODAC Quarterfinal action Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons end their season with a 13-3-3 record while the Tigers, who advance to Wednesday's ODAC Semifinal vs. Washington & Lee, improve to 7-8-3.
Roanoke, which holds a 25-11-4 series advantage against Hampden-Sydney, is now 2-0-1 in the ODAC Tournament against their conference-rival. The Maroons finished, 6-0-3 in the final nine games of the season.
In the first half of play, two-time NSCAA All-American Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville) was ejected with a Red Card, forcing the Maroons to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. The Maroons persevered throughout regulation and the two overtime periods to force penalty kicks.
The defensive unit of Cameron Lee (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School), Andrew Markey (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River) and Stark tied the 1993 squad for the most shutouts in program-history with 14. The Maroons also finished 8-0-2 at home and didn't allow a goal at Kerr Stadium this fall. It is the fourth undefeated home-record in the 65-years of Roanoke Men's Soccer.
The contest on paper went to the Maroons. The men won the battle in shots (18-6), 6-1 in shots on goal and 9-2 on corner kicks.
Johnny Hughes (Salem, VA, Salem) led Roanoke with three shots, including one shot on goal. Bo Burns had two shots, on on goal for the Tigers.
John Robert Plyler finished with six saves, in addition to back-to-back stops on penalty kicks. Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) (4-1-3) collected one save on the afternoon.
