Men's Soccer Battles Lynchburg to Scoreless Tie in ODAC-Opener
SALEM --- Roanoke battled ODAC-rival Lynchburg to a scoreless tie in both teams conference-opener Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are now 3-1-1 on the season, while the Hornets are 2-2-1.

Roanoke, which is 9-1-4 over its last 14 outings dating back to last season, played in front of a large crowd to help its cause in an exciting up-tempo match-up. The Hornets hold a 2-0-3 series advantage since 2007. RC holds a 36-20-4 all-time series lead against its in-state conference foe.

With 21 ODAC Championships between the two teams in the 35-year history of the conference, both squads came out firing with 11 shots in the first half. Outstanding defensive play by both goalkeepers and their respective backfields left the contest scoreless at the half.

AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern), who led the Maroons with four shots with Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) on the night, had a breakaway opportunity that was broken up thanks to a team save and a diving stop by Lynchburg goalkeeper Michael Releford just before the horn sounded for the end of regulation.

Roanoke maintained possession on their side of the field for most of the overtime periods, constantly pushing up to find a scoring opportunity. With 20-seconds remaining, Tierce had another good look between the posts, but his shot sailed just wide as time expired.

The Maroons held the edge against the Hornets in shots, 17-7 and 6-2 in corner kicks. Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) finished with four saves while Releford collected seven on the night for Lynchburg.

The men return to action this weekend in two road contests. The men will travel to Lexington to take on Washington and Lee on Saturday. They then turn around and drive south to North Carolina to play Greensboro in non-conference action.
