Lentine Nets Double Overtime Goal to Defeat John Carroll 3-2

LYNCHBURG – The Roanoke College men's soccer team battled John Carroll to a double overtime, 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Lynchburg Invitational. The Maroons now sit with a 4-0 record, while the Blue Streaks have a mark of 2-1.

Roanoke's 4-0 mark is their best start since the 2010 season, where the team started with a 5-0 record. The Maroons are now 2-0 all time against John Carroll, having defeated the Blue Streaks 2-0 back in 2007.

John Carroll struck first in the contest, as Nathan Sharbaugh found the back of the net at the 29:28 mark off of a pass from Brian Potocnik. The Maroons scored the equalizer just 12 seconds later as Orestis Ilias marched down the field and tied the game at 1-1. Six Minutes later, Mark Dinkel gave Roanoke the go ahead goal, with the Maroons taking a 2-1 lead.

With 61:59 elapsed in the contest Jimmy Mattina tied the game up at 2-2, as the Blue Streak scored the unassisted goal. Both teams shut each other out for the remainder of regulation to send the game to overtime in a 2-2 tie.

Neither team could put the game away in the first overtime period, but Robbie Lentine ended the contest just 11 seconds into the second overtime. Lentine scored the goal off of a Tyler Carbaugh pass, allowing the Maroons to win their fourth consecutive contest.

The Maroons led the contest with 20 shots to the Blue Streak's 14. This is the second consecutive game where Roanoke has fired off 20 or more shots. Tyler Carbaugh and Garrett Eldridge led the team in shots with four each, while Jackson Goyette and Mark Dinkel had three apiece. Michael Perry played for the duration of the contest, making five saves on the afternoon. The Maroons also led in corner kicks 12-3.

John Carroll was led in shots by Brian Potocnik, who fired off three over the course of the afternoon. Thor Erikson, Trent Guy, and Nathan Sharbaugh each finished with two shots. Zach Fehernbach tallied two saves in the 100 minutes he played in net.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, September 14th as they travel to Ashland, VA to take on Randolph-Macon. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
