Leona Rainey named ODAC Softball Player of the Week
Freshman Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin)was named ODAC Softball Player of the Week announced Monday evening. It is the first time in her career and the second Maroon this season to garner the weekly honor. She is the fourth freshman at Roanoke and the first time since Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy)in 2008 that a first-year player has earned the award.
 
Rainey, a centerfielder, went 12-for-19 with three doubles, six runs scored and six stolen bases as the Maroons won all five games last week. Went 3-for-5 against both Peace and Piedmont with a double in each game as the Maroons won both against two south region teams in the Ferrum Invitational. Had two stolen bases against Piedmont and UVA-Wise. Against Virginia Intermont, she went 2-for-2 in game one with an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs. In game two, she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
For the season, Rainey is leading the Maroons in batting (.511), at bats (47), runs (14), hits (24), and stolen bases with 11. She has also totaled three doubles, six RBI and three walks.
 
Roanoke is currently 14-1 on the season, riding a 13-game winning streak which is the longest since the 2008 season (16 games). The 14-1 start is the best since the 2006 season, when the Maroons started, 17-1.
 
The Maroons will return to action this Wednesday, March 17 as they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on ODAC-foe Guilford. Game time for the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
