Roanoke Claims Four Wins in Roanoke Valley Softball Bash
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke extended its winning-streak to seven-straight as they won all four games in the Roanoke Valley Softball Bash at the Moyer Complex this weekend. The Maroons, who won three of four on Sunday, are now 11-3 on the season.
 
On Saturday, Roanoke topped Peace College, 3-0 to open the weekend classic. The Maroons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and that was all starting pitcher Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy) (4-2) needed as threw a gem against the PacersWolfe tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out six to record her fourth victory of the season.
 
In the top of the first, Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster) got the Maroons on the board with an RBI-single to right center, scoring Alea Bier (Bent Mountain, VA, Cave Springs). Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross) scored on an error and Caudle later crossed home plate off a bases loaded walk drawn by Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian) to give the eventual final result. 
 
Peace never had more than one base-runner on at a time for the duration of the game. Aaryn Deal picked up the loss on the mound for the Pacers.
 
Roanoke cruised past Wartburg, 4-0 in the first of three games on Sunday. Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley) (2-1) followed Wolfe's performance with a stellar outing, tossing the second-straight shutout of the tournament in a complete game win.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Caudle drove in Scruggs and Stephanie Clark (Nathalle, VA, Halifax) for a two-out single. Scruggs led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and scored off a Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany) two-run homer to dead center that put the game away. Peace tried to make a push in the top of the seventh, getting runners on second and third before Norwich closed the door with a strikeout to end the game. Popov took the loss on the hill for Wartburg.
 
The second game of the day was a rout, 16-0 over Cazenovia. Caudle went 4-for-4 with four runs followed by Weingard who went 2-for-2 with two runs, a three-run homer and four RBI.
 
Lowery was the story for the Maroons, as she nearly hit for the cycle with a double, a triple and a home run to go with three runs and four runs batted in. Norwich went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
 
Janie Holmes (Hartfield, VA, Middlesex) (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for RC, going all five innings with three strikeouts.
 
The final game of the day resulted in a 10-2 victory over in-state foe, Averett in five innings. Norwich and Caudle each finished 3-for-3 as Caudle drove in three runs. Bier went 2-for-4 with two RBI as Lowery went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River) (3-0) threw a complete game victory with six strikeouts and allowed four hits.
 
The women open their ODAC portion of the season with a doubleheader against Guilford College. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Moyer Complex.
