Softball Splits Doubleheader against Virginia Wesleyan
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke split the double-header versus Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 23-7 overall and 8-4 in ODAC action while the Marlins drop to 24-6 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

In game one, the Maroons swept the Marlins with a 12-0 finish in game one but fell 2-1 in game two.

The Maroons began strong in the first game with four first-inning runs. Lisa Scruggs (Madison Heights, VA, Holy Cross) singled in Leona Rainey (Sandston, VA, Mills Godwin) for the first run. Scruggs then scored off of a single from Meghan Weingard (Boca Raton, FL, North Broward Prep) who went 2-for-2 and had two RBIs. Hollee Warlitner (Clifton Forge, VA, Alleghany) scored the first of her two runs before end of the inning.

Scruggs scored the second of three runs in the second inning off a single from Sara Caudle (Irvington, VA, Lancaster).  Scruggs scored again off hit from Felice Lowery (Madison Heights, VA, Lynchburg Christian) in the third. Scruggs led the Maroons going 3-for-3 at bat and had three RBIs. Caudle went 2-3 at bat and had two RBIs.

Lis Norwich (Hegins, PA, Tri-Valley) held her own, striking out four and only allowing two hits against the Marlins. She went 2-3 behind the plate with one RBI and scored a run.  Alea Bier (Bent Mountain, VA, Cave Springs) scored her second run in the third inning after she went 2-for-2 at the plate.

M. Creech is now 13-3 for the Marlins after letting up the first 10 runs for the Maroons. A. Probasco finished out the last two innings when the Maroons scored their last two runs.

Rain became an issue in game two and it was called in the sixth inning leaving Virginia Wesleyan with a 2-1 win.  Gretchen Wolfe (New Windsor, NY, Newburgh Free Academy) (6-4) started strong but allowed two runs in the top of the fourth inning. She did manage to finish with seven strikeouts.  Abigail Rexrode (Fincastle, VA, James River) came in as a relief in the sixth inning but the game was called shortly thereafter.

Lowery scored an unearned run in the fourth but the Maroons were unable to catch up before the game was called.  Warlitner and Stephanie Clark (Nathalle, VA, Halifax) each collected two hits in the second game to lead the Maroons.

B. Bertovich and S. Dailey had an RBI each for the Marlins and C. Crawford collected the win after only one run and four strike-outs.

Roanoke will face Ferrum College next for a double-header on Tuesday, April 12 that is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
