Maroons Blank Spartans, 9-0 in Five Innings
TROUTVILLE – The Roanoke College softball team picked up a win in their lone game in the Roanoke Valley Softball Bash on Saturday, defeating Castleton State College 9-0 in five innings.  The Maroons now have a record of 13-4, while the Spartans have a record of 0-7.
 
The Maroons started hot early as leadoff batter, Leona Rainey, hit a solo home run to open the bottom of the first inning.  A few batters later, Alexis Roop hit a two RBI homer, giving the Maroons a 3-0 lead.  Two batters later, Morgan Wood hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Caitlin Manuel on the play.  After the first inning, Roanoke led 4-0.
 
Roanoke continued to pile up the runs in the second inning as well.  Rainey scored again, this time advancing on a ground out in the infield.  Stephanie Clark then reached base on an error, allowing Alea Bier to cross the plate.  Then, for the second time in the day, Roop hit a two RBI home run, giving Roanoke an 8-0 lead after two.  The Maroons scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Hollee Wariltner hit a solo home run.  Roanoke held the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the game, winning 9-0 in just five innings.
 
Alexis Roop led the Maroons in hitting, going 3-3 on the day, scoring two runs and tallying four RBIs.  Leona Rainey followed, going 2-2 and scoring two runs.  Kelly Higbie (6-3) picked up the win for Roanoke, pitching four innings, and striking out seven.
 
Jessica Babcock, Brittany Brayman, Chelsea Grady and Tori Fearon had one hit each on the afternoon for Castleton.  Emily Sweeney (0-4) earned the loss, giving up nine runs off nine hits, and striking out one.
 
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 17th as they take on ODAC opponent Eastern Mennonite on the road.  That contest is scheduled for a 1:30 PM start.
