Softball Defeats Randolph Twice by Run-Rule
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team swept Randolph College in a pair of games that ended via run rule. The Maroons topped the WildCats 8-0 in five innings in the first contest, then won 12-4 in six innings in the second game. The Maroons are now 12-10, 7-3 in ODAC play, while the WildCats are 11-13, 4-8 in the ODAC.

Roanoke has won seven of its last nine games. The 7-3 record in the ODAC moves the Maroons into fourth in the ODAC. Through the end of today's first game, Roanoke had tallied 17 consecutive shutout innings against its opponent.

Roanoke opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning in the first game. Becca Wenger hit a solo home run to left center field, giving the Maroons a 1-0 advantage. Taylor Carter, with two runners on, later singled to score Rhea Schleicher. In the bottom of the third, Samantha Baldwin hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field, scoring Katie Smith on the play. In the fourth, Jordan Meador hit a single to center field, bringing around Schleicher for her second run of the game. In the same inning, Taylor Carter hit a two-run shot over the fence, plating Meador to lead 6-0. The final, game-ending runs came off of a two RBI single by Meador, which brought home Wenger and Kelly Higbie for the 8-0 run rule victory.

Taylor Carter and Jordan Meador each led the Maroons in hitting, going 2-3 in the game, with one run scored and three RBIs. Becca Wenger also finished 2-3, with two runs and one RBI. Samantha Baldwin also finished with one RBI. Kelly Higbie pitched a complete game, five inning no-hitter. She struck out one batter and walked two, facing just 17 batters.

Randolph's Lauren Morris was tabbed with the loss, giving up three runs off five hits.

The WildCats broke the Maroons shutout streak of 17 innings in the top of the first inning. Hunter Glave hit a single up the middle which brought home Haley Brickles, giving the WildCats a 1-0 lead. Roanoke turned the contest around quickly with three runs scored in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded Baldwin was hit by a pitch, scoring Sutherland. Williams and Schleicher were each walked as well, plating two more runs for the Maroons for a 3-1 lead after one inning.

In the second, Roanoke plated two more. Baldwin hit a single to left field, bringing around Taylor Carter to score. Williams later doubled to right center field, allowing Wenger to score from third. Baldwin continued to help the Maroons, this time in the bottom of the fourth with a two run homer, putting the Maroons ahead 7-1 after four. Randolph gave Roanoke a run in the top of the fifth, by Glave hitting a three run shot to center field, cutting the Maroon deficit to three, 7-4.

Carter opened with a triple in the inning. Sutheland followed with a suicide squeeze bunt bringing home Carter for the run. With the bases loaded Kelly Higbie hit a single through the left side for an RBI. Two batters later, Jordan Meador walked to bring in the 10th run of the game. Finally, Rachel Guilliams hit a single to center, notching two RBIs and sealing the game for Roanoke, 12-4 in the sixth inning.

Samantha Baldwin led the Maroons in hitting in game two, going 2-2 win one run scored and four RBIs. Ruthe Williams went 1-2 with two RBIs. Carter, Sutherland, Smith and Wenger all finished the game with two runs each. Williams picked up the victory with four innings pitched, giving up three runs and striking out three.

The WildCats finished with seven hits in the second game. Hunter Glave and Haleigh Wilson led the team with two hits each, while Glave tallied four RBIs. Hannah Winfree pitched 5.2 innings for the WildCats, giving up 12 runs off seven hits with three strikeouts.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 4th as they travel to Ashland to take on Randolph-Macon. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
