RC Softball Splits Season Opening Doubleheader at Greensboro

The Lead: The Roanoke College Softball team opened its 2016 campaign by pounding out 17 hits in an 11-4 victory over home standing Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • The Maroons picked up a pair of runs in the top-half of the first inning when Taylor Carter scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Katie Smith and Becca Wenger doubled home Taylor Slate.
  • A two RBI double by Allyson Yeager in the next half inning tied the game for Greensboro at 2-2 before RC took the lead right back in the second inning on RBI singles from Carter and Smith.
  • Mattie Morris doubled in the third inning to plate pinch-runner Taylor Asimakopoulos to put RC out in front 5-2.
  • Greensboro got a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the third inning to cut its deficit to 5-4.
  • Roanoke put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning that featured an RBI double from Rachel Guilliams and an RBI single from Erin Forbes to make it 7-4.
  • Ruthie Williams started in the circle for RC and picked up the win after going 2.2 innings allowing four runs, two of which were earned and she struck out one. Teresa Wagner and Emily Salsberry combined to throw 4.1 innings of two hit relief for the Maroons.

The Lead: Maddy Wetherholt tossed a complete game shutout to lift Greensboro to a 1-0 win over Roanoke and earn a split on the day for The Pride.

How it Happened
  • The lone run of game came when Alexis Hall was able to come around and score following an RC throwing error.
  • Roanoke's best chance to score came in the top of the third when Guilliams singled and Samantha Baldwin walked to put two runners on, but Wetherholt was able to get Marleigh Hall out to retire the side.
  • Asimakopoulos was the hard luck loser in the circle for RC. She allowed just two hits over five innings of work. Courtney Oliver threw one inning of one hit relief.
Up Next: Roanoke will return to action on Saturday when it takes part in the Triangle Classic in North Carolina. RC will face Salisbury and NC Wesleyan on Saturday and McDaniel and Meredith on Sunday.
