Softball Splits at Greensboro in Season-Opener

The Basics

Game 1

The Lead: Roanoke scored three runs in the final three innings to secure a 4-1 win over Greensboro in its season-opener.

How it Happened: 

  • Teresa Wagner (1-0) picked up the win allowing only one run off seven hits in six innings of work. Emily Salsberry earned the save after retiring the side in the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the top of the third, Allison Wagner singled to center field with two outs before Taylor Carter drove her in with a triple to right-center to give RC a 1-0 lead. 
  • GC responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single from Jasmine Worthy and an RBI double from Taylor Little to tie to the game.
  • Becca Wenger launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give the Maroons the lead for good.
  • Katie Smith tacked on another run in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle and Wenger brought in the final run in the seventh with a sac fly, scoring Bailey Perdue.
  • Carter led the way going 2-for-3 while Wenger had a game-high two RBI.
  • Cheyanne Cox was tabbed with the loss after tossing a complete game, allowing four runs off six hits.

The Lead: The Pride scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory in the second game 2-1 Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Carter kicked off the top of the third with a single up the middle before Anna Clowdis brought her in with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Greensboro tied it up as Regan Lockwood hit an infield single to score Allyson Loy to make it 1-1.
  • Taylor Asimakopoulos held The Pride scoreless through three innings, allowing only two hits, before being relieved by Salsberry who kept it 1-1 through the seventh.
  • In the eighth inning with international tiebreaker rules in effect, Greensboro was able to move the runner to third base off a sac bunt. Lockwood then brought in the winning run with an infield single to secure the win.
  • Five different Maroons recorded hits in the contest with Clowdis tallying the lone RBI.
  • Greensboro was led by Lockwood with two hits and two RBI. Maddy Wetherhot (1-0) earned the win allowing one run off five hits in the extra-inning performance. 

Up Next: Roanoke is off until Feb. 24-25 when it heads to Raleigh, N.C. for the Grand Salm Triangle Classic.
