Softball Splits With Pfeiffer in Home-Opener

The Lead: Roanoke used 12 hits to score 12 runs in a 12-5 victory over Pfeiffer to open Monday's doubleheader.

How it Happened

  • RC wasted no time getting on the board as Taylor Carter led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a throwing error by Pfeiffer. Anna Clowdis followed with a double to score Katie Smith and make it 2-0 Maroons.
  • After the first two batters were retired in the second inning, Roanoke loaded the bases before Smith singled to score pinch runner Scarlett Sisson to make it 3-0. Back-to-back RBI singles by Clowdis and Mattie Morris scored three runs, before a Katie Priester single scored a pair and gave RC an 8-0 lead.
  • With the score 8-1 in the RC fourth, Carter and Smith each got on base to start the inning before Clowdis doubled them both home to make it a 10-1 game. Later in the inning, Becca Wenger singled home Clowdis before Bailey Purdue delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 12-1
  • Pfeiffer rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth to make it 12-5 but RC reliever Emily Salsberry allowed just one hit in three innings of work to put the game away. Teresa Wagner earned the win after going four innings for RC.

How it Happened

  • With Pfeiffer ahead 1-0 in the second inning, the Falcons got RBI singles from Vada Blue Sherrill, Chandler Walker, and Kiana Millsaps to push their advantage to 4-0.
  • RC was able to score on a passed ball and sacrifice fly off the bat of Mattie Morris to make it 4-2 after three innings of play.
  • The Falcons blew the game open with a six-run sixth inning that saw Pfeiffer score three of those runs with two outs to make it 10-2.
  • Roanoke scored one run in the sixth off a two-out single from Olivia Simmons followed by an RBI single from Carter to make it 10-3.
  • Wenger drove in Clowdis, who reached on a walk, in the bottom of the seventh but that would be the final run of the night.
  • Courtney Oliver was tabbed with the loss giving up four runs off four hits in two innings. Kennedy Lester earned the win giving up two runs off four hits in four innings of work.
