Softball Defeats Penn College in Day One of Beach Blast

The Basics

Game 1 
Score: Roanoke 13 | Penn College 1 (5 innings)
Records: Roanoke 6-5 | Penn College 4-5
Location: Virginia Beach, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke scored five runs in the first inning and eight runs in the fourth en route to a 13-1 win in game one.

How it Happened:

  • Taylor Carter had a leadoff walk, stole second and was moved to third on a single from Katie Smith. Anna Clowdis hit an RBI single to break open the scoring.
  • Becca Wenger and Kendall Penn each tallied RBI singles to keep the inning going. Allison Wagner and Carter had back-to-back bases-loaded walks to close the inning with a 5-0 advantage.
  • Roanoke tacked on eight more runs in the fourth highlighted by a two-RBI single from Mattie Morris, a two-RBI double from Penn followed by an RBI single from both Scarlett Sisson and Ruthie Williams.
  • Penn led the way going 3-for-3 with three RBI while eight other Maroons tallied a hit in the win.
  • Teresa Wagner earned the win allowing only three hits in four innings of work before Olivia Simmons gave up only two hits and one run in the final inning.
  • Taylor Brooks was tabbed with the loss for Penn College giving up five runs off four hits with four walks.

Game 2
Score: Manhattanville 8 | Roanoke 2
Records: Roanoke 6-6 | Manhattanville 5-3
Location: Virginia Beach, Va.

The Lead: The Maroons fell to Manhattanville 8-2 in the second game of the day.

How it Happened: 

  • Manhattanville used a five-run inning in the top of the first to take an early lead, highlighted by a three-run homer from Sam Jedrey.
  • Carter led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second before Smith moved her to third with a groundout and Carter scored on a Valiant throwing error to close the gap to 5-1.
  • After four scoreless innings, Manhattanville hit two solo home runs to make it 7-1.
  • With the score 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Penn reached on a fielders choice, Williams hit a single to move her to third and Carter pushed the run across on a fielders choice to make it an 8-2 game but that would be as close as the Maroons would get.
  • Alycia Feeney held Roanoke to seven hits and two runs while striking out three in the complete-game win. 

Up Next: Roanoke faces Gettysburg at 12 p.m. and Frostburg State at 2 p.m. in the final day of the Beach Blast Tournament.
