The Lead:  Emily Salsberry threw a complete game one hitter to lead Roanoke in an 8-0 win in game one.

How it Happened

  • To start the bottom of the first, Katie Smith earned a walk then Anna Clowdis reached on a Cougar error. Ruthie Williams followed with a walk to load the bases.
  • Mattie Morris drove in Smith with an infield grounder to make it 1-0. Kate Priester kept the inning going with a double which scored Williams and Clowdis to make it 3-0.
  • Kendall Penn then singled to left and scored Priester to bring the score 4-0 at the end of the first.
  • In the second inning, Averett earned their only hit of the game with a double from Amanda Wright.
  • Taylor Carter started the bottom of the second with an infield single then stole second. Carter was then brought in following an Averett.
  • The game remained 5-0 Roanoke until the bottom of the fifth when Williams singled to center field and for a pinch runner Scarlett Sisson.
  • Sisson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morris. Priester then singled to right and stole second. Both runners would score on a ball hit by Penn that was misplayed in the AU outfield.
  • Becca Wenger followed with a single to left field to score Penn and end the game at 8-0.

Game 2

The Lead: Roanoke used a three-run sixth inning to break open a tie and go onto a 4-1 win to earn the sweep. 

How it Happened

  • With the game scoreless in the Averett fourth inning, Wright tripled and scored on a fielder's choice, making it 1-0.
  • RC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Williams walked with one out and was lifted for Sisson on the base paths. Marlene Carlson followed with an RBI double to knot the game at 1-1.
  • The game stayed that way until the home-half of the sixth inning where Williams led off with a walk. Oliva Simmons ran for her, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Priester then doubled to score Simmons and put RC on top 2-1.
  • Later in the inning, Taylor Carter delivered a two-out single to score Priester and Penn and push RC's lead to 4-1.
  • Teresa Wagner went the distance for Roanoke, giving up just three hits and one run to improve her record to 4-2 on the year.
