The Lead: No. 6 Christopher Newport defeated Roanoke 8-0 in five innings in game one.

How it Happened:

  • After four scoreless innings, CNU scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to secure the win.
  • The Captains used five singles and five walks to score the only runs of the game while capitalizing on a Roanoke error in the top of the inning.
  • The Maroons were held to only two hits led by Taylor Carter and Kate Priester each going 1-for-2 as Emily Weatherholtz moved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
  • Liz Andrews, Tara Deck and Savannah Couch recorded two RBI each for CNU.
  • Emily Salsberry (4-3) was tabbed with the loss allowing three runs off two hits in 4.2 innings of work.

The Lead: CNU took a 6-1 win in game two to earn the sweep Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened:

  • CNU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first highlighted by a lead off double from Lead Andrews and a single from Grace Wild.
  • With the Captain leading 4-0 in the fourth, CNU tacked on two more runs with a double from Patty Maye Ohanian and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Calah Savage.
  • Carter kicked off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. Katie Smith hit an infield single. With one out, Ruthie Williams lifted a sac fly to center to score Carter and close the gap to 6-1.
  • Aubrey Bates earned the win giving up four hits and no runs in five innings of work. For RC, Teresa Wagner was tabbed with the loss giving up four runs off seven hits in the first three innings. 

Up Next: Roanoke opens ODAC play on Wednesday against Guilford with a doubleheader slated for 5 p.m. in Salem.
