Softball Sweeps Shenandoah in Regular Season Finale

The Basics

Game 1
Score: Roanoke 14 | Shenandoah 2
Records: Roanoke 23-16, 10-7 ODAC | Shenandoah 13-24, 3-14 ODAC
Location: Winchester, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke scored eight runs in the seventh inning to take game one 14-2.

How it Happened:

  • Shenandoah scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off an RBI single from Kayla O'Connell and Morgan Henley knocked in Megan Wilk to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Becca Wenger hit a solo homer to get the Maroons on the board and kick off the top of the third. Katie Smith knocked a triple to right field to score Taylor Carter who reached on a walk. Anna Clowdis capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Smith to give Roanoke a 3-2 edge.
  • With a 4-2 advantage RC, Smith drove in two more runs in the top of the sixth following a single to left field to extend the gap to 6-2.
  • The Maroons tacked on eight more runs in the top of the seventh off five hits and one Hornet error. Mattie Morris sparked the scoring with an RBI triple and Kate Priester drove in Morris in the next at-bat. Taylor Asimakopoulos and Briana Nardone hit back-to-back doubles to close out the scoring for a combined 3 RBI.
  • Bailey Perdue turned a triple play in the bottom of the seventh off a line drive to close out the contest.
  • Emily Salsberry earned the win in the complete game performance allowing only two runs off six hits, including three innings where the Hornets were retired in order.
  • Smith went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Priester was 3-for-5 for the Maroons. 

Game 2

Records: Roanoke 24-16, 11-7 ODAC | Shenandoah 13-25, 3-15 ODAC
Location: Winchester, Va.

The Lead: The Maroons earned a 4-3 win in game two to take the sweep of Sunday's doubleheader.

How it Happened:

  • After two scoreless innings, Taylor Carter walked with one out and stole second in the top of the third. Katie Smith hit a single through the left side, plating Carter to take a 1-0 lead. Mattie Morris then hit a single up the middle to score both Anna Clowdis and Ruthie Williams to make it 3-0.
  • The Hornets responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning following back-to-back singles from Allie Schey and Megan Will.
  • With the score 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Carter drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Clowdis lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Carter in what proved to be the game-winner.
  • Shenandoah rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh nning off a two-out double from Morgan Henley to make it a 4-3 game but that would be as close as SU would get as Teresa Wagner recorded a strikeout to finish the game.
  • Wagner earned the win in the complete game performance allowing only three runs off four hits while striking out six.
  • Williams led the way going 2-for-2 for the Maroons while Henley was 2-for-2 for the Hornets.
