The Basics
Score: Roanoke 7, Averett 1
Records: Roanoke 16-14 | Averett 22-12
Location: Danville, Va.  

The Lead: Roanoke took game one of the doubleheader with a 7-1 win over the Cougars.

How it Happened:

  • In the Roanoke first inning, Meagan Evans connected for a three-run homer to left field to make it 3-0
  • The Maroons added four more runs in the fourth following a leadoff walk and two consecutive fielder's choices on sacrifice bunt attempts that didn't yield an out. A two-run single by Rebecca Hensley made it 5-0, and Roanoke added a run on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to take a seven-run lead.
  • Averett's lone run in the opener came on Breanna Murphy RBI groundout.
  • Emily Salsberry (7-5) allowed just four hits and one run while striking out seven to pick up the win in the circle for RC.
  • Evans finished with two hits and four RBI, while Kendell Penn had two hits as well.

The Lead: Averett earned a split of the non-conference doubleheader with an 8-1 win in game two.  

How it Happened:

  • The Cougars took the early lead, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. Kaitlyn Aherron led off with a double to left-center, then Hannah Thompson followed with an RBI single to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.
  • Following a single by Anna Coleman, which put runners on the corners, Averett executed a double steal make it 2-0.
  • The Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles by Taylor Bailey and Casey Cook extended Averett's advantage to 4-0. Hannah Thompson followed later in the inning with a bases-clearing, three-run double down the left field line to make it a seven-run lead. Thompson then came home from second on an infield single by Coleman to second base, making it 8-0.
  • Courtney Oliver (3-4) took the loss for RC after allowing six runs in 3.1 innings of work. Taylor Bailey went the distance for AU, allowing one run on six hits to improve her record to 5-4 on the season.
