The Lead: Southern Virginia topped Roanoke 69-65 in overtime in Friday night non-conference women's basketball action.
How it Happened
- Kristina Harrel scored a career-high 23 points, Corinne McPadden had 14 points, while Madeline Suhr chipped in with eight points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds.
- SVU was paced by Shelby Winsor who had 19 points and was one of four Knights in double-digits. Alex Barnes had 17 points, while Katie Garrish finished with 13 and Bryndie Ballam had 11.
- Both teams struggled shooting in the first-half, combining to go just 17-of-64 from the field and turn the ball over 24 times.
- The Maroons would lead 27-26 at the break on the strength of 10 points from Harrel and by going 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
- Roanoke opened the second-half with a 9-2 run, pushing ahead 36-28 on a Harrel three-pointer with 4:38 left to play in the quarter.
- With the score 38-30 RC with 3:25 to go, SVU rallied to close the quarter on a 9-3 spurt to make it a 41-39 game heading into the final quarter.
- Two free-throws by Molly Hassell gave Roanoke a 53-48 advantage with 3:16 to go in regulation. SVU would score seven of the final nine points, tying the game on a three-pointer by Barnes with two seconds left.
- Barnes opened the overtime period with a three-pointer as the Knights scored the first five points to take a 60-55 lead.
- A Harrel three-pointer made it a 66-65 game with 29 seconds left, but Barnes made two free-throws on the ensuing SVU possession to extend the lead to three. RC turned the ball over on its next possession and Garrish would seal the game with a free-throw on the other end.
Up Next: Roanoke will take 10 days off for exams before returning to action at Babson in Wellesley, Mass. tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. on Dec. 18.
