The Lead: Virginia Wesleyan held off Roanoke for a 53-48 ODAC Women's Basketball win on Saturday.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke came out firing taking a 10-1 lead following three free-throws by Molly Hassell, three minutes into the game.
  • VWU rallied outscoring RC 11-1 over the next four minutes to tie the game at 12-12. A Megan Wheeler basket with under a minute to go gave RC a 14-12 edge after one quarter.
  • Roanoke scored the first four points of the second quarter to take an 18-12 advantage. The Marlins would then go on a 17-3 run to close the half and take a 29-21 lead into the intermission.
  • RC chipped away and cut the VWU lead to four at 34-30 after two Hassell free-throws. The Marlins scored the next seven points, moving in front 41-30 with 2:50 to go in the third quarter.
  • The Marlins led 45-36 after three quarters and a Jaelyn Washington bucket to open the fourth quarter made it a 47-36 game.
  • RC rallied with a 10-0 run, pulling within one when a Madeline Suhr free-throw made the score 47-46 with 4:27 to play.
  • With the score 51-48 with 19 seconds left, Roanoke had a chance to tie the game but RC missed a three-point attempt and Raya Berkley sank two free-throws on the other end to seal the game.
  • Roanoke was led by Hassell with 16 points, while Suhr had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria Maxwell had nine points and 10 boards.
  • Virginia Wesleyan got 12 points from Jayla Harris and 10 points off the bench from NiAsia Caldwell.
