The Lead: The Roanoke women welcomed back several former players and coaches as they played host to the defending ODAC Champions from Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets used a big second quarter run to take a lead into the break and held a double-digit advantage for most of the second half on their way to the conference win.

How it Happened:

  • A pair of Kristina Harrel free throws was the only offense that RC would see as Shenandoah opened the game on a 10-2 run.
  • A Sayre Brandstatter three would cap a 7-0 Roanoke surge as the gap was closed to a single point, 10-9, with 3:00 remaining in the first period.
  • Corinne McPadden hit jumper to make it a one point spread heading into the second quarter, 16-15.
  •  Kayla Kinsler and Whitney Hopson opened the frame with back-to-back buckets as the Maroons enjoyed their first lead of the contest. However, Olivia Weinel would tie and then allow the Horents to re-take the lead with a pair of free throws.
  • The defending champs would push their advantage to 10 before a Kinsler jumper from beyond the arch made it 39-32 at the break.
  • Trailing by nine at the 4:00 minute mark, RC would see their guests end the quarter by scoring eight of the final 11 points to take a 14 point edge into the final period of play, 56-42.
  • A Ragan Johnson layup gave Shenandoah their largest lead of the game, 19, with just over six minutes to go.
  • The Roanoke defense would hold the Hornets scoreless over the final two and a half minutes but couldn't close the gap as RC fell in the ODAC math up.
  • Harrel and Brandstatter were the only Maroons in double figures with 11 apiece. Whitney Hopson added four rebounds and four steals as she and Brandstatter would each hand out two assists. Harrel and D'Anna Cvetnich also grabbed four boards.

Up next: The Maroons will travel to Randolph college for a 7:00pm tip on Wednesday night.
