ORLANDO, Fla. --- Roanoke fell to Mary Washington, 17-9 on Monday but rebounded on Wednesday, knocking off #17 St. John Fisher, 12-10, at the World of Disney Classic. The Maroons are 1-1 after the season-opening classic, while the Eagles improved to 1-1, and SJF dropped to 0-1.
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ) led the Maroons in scoring this week with 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. She passed recent Roanoke Hall-of-Famer, Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT, Greenwich) '99 for sixth on the career scoring list (191pts). Her 150 career goals are now three shy of fourth all-time at Roanoke.
Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville) totaled four points for the week, moving into a tie for 14th on the all-time scoring list (140pts).
Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford) finished with a team-high nine groundballs while Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) led Roanoke with eight caused turnovers for the week.
In the season-opener, Roanoke fell to Mary Washington, 17-9. They were down, 8-2 in the first 26 minutes of play and couldn't gain ground as the Maroons dropped to 11-13 all-time against the Eagles. UMW won 21-of-28 draw controls and outshot the Maroons, 34-29. RC won 18-of-22 clear attempts and held a 24-18 groundball advantage.
Valles led the Maroons with four goals and one assist. Brooks Laufman (Annapolis, MD, Severn) added a goal and an assist to tie for 18th on the career scoring list (134pts).
Freshman Casey Esloon (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood) finished with 12 saves in her first collegiate start. Leigh Ann Redefer had 11 in goal for the Eagles.
Catherine Kennedy had five goals and an assist to lead the Eagles. Allie Kimmleman had a solid performance with three goals and three assists while Katie Wallis scored three goals and dished out two assists. Brittany Butler had three goals. Lauren Callison added a goal and two assists.
The Maroons scored five of the last six goals in a, 12-10 overtime win over #17 St. John Fisher Wednesday morning. Mason scored the eventual game-winner in the overtime period to give the Maroons their first win of the season. Roanoke is now 3-0 against the Cardinals.
Roanoke outshot SJF, 34-32, and held advantages in groundballs (26-15) and draw controls (14-12). The Maroons also went 19-for-21 on clear attempts.
Defensively, Rourke led Roanoke with five caused turnovers and three groundballs. Sanfilippo won three draw controls and collected six groundballs while Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor) won three draws and caused three turnovers. Carolyn Clark (Baltimore, MD, Towson) had four groundballs.
Valles scored seven goals with two assists, which tied the career-high she set against Washington & Lee last season. Mason had three goals and one assist, including the game-winner in the overtime win.
Jamie Golden (Timonium, MD, Notre Dame) and Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) scored their first career points off a goal and an assist, respectively.
Esloon had 10 saves in her first collegiate victory in goal for the Maroons.
Meg Merriam led SJF with three goals, followed by Trish Scudder with two along with an assist. Ashley Fenyn and Mary Stimson added two goals each.
The women return to action on March 12 as the Maroons host Ursinus in their home-opener at Kerr Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
