Washington & Lee Breaks Skid with 9-7 Win over Roanoke
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Washington & Lee held off a late Roanoke rally to win, 9-7 at the W&L Turf Field Monday afternoon. The Generals improved to 6-4 overall, and remain undefeated in ODAC play with a 4-0 mark. The Maroons dropped to 3-5, 1-1 in the conference.
Roanoke won in groundballs (16-14) and shots (20-17) while 11-of-12 in clear attempts. Unfortunately, the Maroons were 2-for-6 in free-position attempts and were stopped by outstanding goalie play from Katharine Farrar, who finished with 10 saves on the day.
The Generals, who are now 22-15 against their ODAC-rival, won for the first time in three outings. W&L held a slim, 9-8 edge in draw controls.
Down five goals with 22:06 left, Paige Mason started the late rally, scoring off a position shot to make it, 8-4. The Maroons got a break as a misplayed pass fell into the Generals net for a Roanoke own goal to cut it to three at the 18:19 mark.
W&L's Britten Matthews moved into seventh on the Generals' all-time scoring list with a goal with 16:55 remaining to make it, 9-5.
Sunni Ray found an open Gina Valles just outside the crease as she zipped it past the keeper to cut it back to three with just under 13 minutes left. Valles found the back of the net again with two minutes to go to slice the deficit to within two goals.
The Maroons had two opportunities at the end, but couldn't capitalize as the Generals caused a turnover and held possession as time expired.
Valles paced Roanoke with four goals, along with two groundballs and one draw control. Valles, who leads the ODAC in scoring and goals, is ranked 13th in the country in goals this season. She also moved into a tie for fifth on the career scoring list (219pts) and is two goals shy of third all-time in goals (173).
Mason finished with a goal, three draw controls and two groundballs. Elizabeth Hartge had three groundballs to lead the Maroons with a draw control.
The women will travel on Friday to take on Sweet Briar in ODAC action. The Maroons are 30-6 against the Vixens, claiming the last four meetings. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
