Women's Lacrosse Blanks Hollins, 24-0
ROANOKE, Va. --- Roanoke scored a season-best 24 goals in a shutout victory, 24-0 over Hollins on Monday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 7-5 overall, 5-1 in the ODAC. Hollins dropped its record to 2-8. The women blanked an opponent for only the sixth time in school-history.
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )came within one goal of tying both the ODAC and NCAA Div. III record in assists with 10 in the road victory. She tallied three goals to finish with a school-record 13 points, along with her assist record.
She now has 82 points, currently tied for ninth in a single-season. Her 30 assists are also ninth on the single-season list. Valles is eight points shy of third on the all-time scoring list with 259 points and moved into a tie for fifth in career assists with 68. Her 191 goals is third on the career list as well at Roanoke.
Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)had a career day, scoring four goals, collected four groundballs and caused four turnovers to lead the Maroons. Elizabeth Hartge (Easton, MD, Easton)finished with two goals and three assists for five points along with three draw controls. Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken)added three goals and an assist, followed by Elizabeth Narwicz (Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington), tallying a career-best four points with two goals and two assists in addition to two draw controls.
Alysa Greer (New Windson, MD, Francis Scott Key), Carly McCall (Dedham, MA, Dana Hall)and Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County)all netted career-highs of two goals apiece. Jamie Golden (Timonium, MD, Notre Dame)and Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford)each chipped in a goal and an assist. Laura Eastlake (Reston, VA, South Lakes)enjoyed her best game of the season with her first goal of the season, three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
The Maroons posted season-highs of 24 goals, 18 assists, 42 points, 38 shots on goal, 23 draw controls and didn't allow a goal. Roanoke outshot Hollins, 49-5 and held the groundball edge, 21-17.
Kelly Sheehan had 14 saves for Hollins. Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz)earned the win in goal for Roanoke, her third of the season. Casey Esloon (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood)had three saves in 18 minutes, as Cristina Scicolone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)had a save in the final 12 minutes of action.
The Maroons won their 30th game against Hollins, more than any other opponent in the 43-year history of the program. It is only the second shutout win against their cross-town rival and the first since the 2006 season. Roanoke scored 20-plus goals against Hollins for the 10th-striaght meeting.
The women will travel to Bridgewater in their final road game of the regular season in ODAC action. The Maroons are 28-3-1 all-time against the Eagles, winning the last 25 meetings. Game time is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
