SALEM - The Roanoke Women's Lacrosse team scored the game winner on a free position shot, to defeat Wittenberg University 11-10 on Sunday. The Maroons rise to 3-2 overall, while the Tigers fall to 2-3 on the season.

The Maroons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half with goals coming from Darragh Everts and Allison Bonanno. With 22:51 to play in the first half, Lindsey Hanners responded with the first of Wittenberg's four consecutive goals. Roanoke at Wittenberg traded goals twice over the next few minutes, but it was the Tigers who took the advantage towards the end of the half, scoring the final goal of the period to lead 7-4.

It looked as though things would be the same as the first half, with Wittenberg netting a goal just 26 seconds into the period. But, Roanoke responded with Everts netting three goals, and Bonanno adding another to tie the game at 8-8 with 19:35 to play.

The Tigers' Marousek scored less than a minute after Roanoke's last goal, reclaiming a one goal lead. Wittenberg's Jennifer Close added one more goal to extend the lead to 10-8.

With 12 minutes to play, Roanoke scored two goals inside a minute, including the game-tying goal from Kathleen Wager. Neither team was able to score another goal until the 5:01 mark, when Wager took a free position attempt and turned into the game-winning goal. Roanoke held off the offense from Wittenberg over the course of the next five mintues and brought home a victory, 11-10 on Sunday.

Everts led the Maroons with five goals on eight shots during the afternoon. Just behind her were Wagner and Bonanno with two goals a piece. Elizabeth Hartge topped the team with four ground balls.

Wittenberg's Alie Marousek had a team high three goals off four shots. Jennifer Close finished the contest with two goals and a team-high two assists.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday March 21st as they travel to Lexington to face Washington and Lee. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM.
