Roanoke Falls in Season Opener to Stevenson University
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team fell 15-3 in its season opener to Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons open the season with a record of 0-1, while the Mustangs are now 1-1.

Stevenson got on the board first as Kathryn Merrick and Amanda LeGar scored from free position shots in the first six minutes of the game to go ahead, 2-0. The Mustangs scored five more times in the first half before the Maroons got their first goal. At the 1:57 mark, Jamie Golden found the back of the net off a pass from Darragh Evarts to cut the deficit to six, 7-1. Merrick scored one more goal for Stevenson in the final moments of the half, ending the period with an 8-1 Mustang lead.

The second half started the same as the first, with Merrick netting a goal from a free position shot. Steven scored two more goals through the 18:00 mark, to take a 11-1 lead. After a 10 minute scoreless drought from both sides, Evarts scored for Roanoke at 8:18 to bring Roanoke within nine, 11-2. Nicole Zelnik scored for Roanoke just 21 seconds later, off a pass from Golden. Stevenson finished the game with four more goals, including two from Mandy Marston. After 60 minutes, Roanoke fell 15-3 in the women's lacrosse season opener.

Three Maroons scored one goal each during the afternoon. Jamie Golden finished the game with one goal and one assist, while Darragh Evarts had one goal and one assists as well. Nicole Zelnik scored the third goal for Roanoke. Evarts led all players in shots with eight. Lauren Curtin and Allison Shannon split time in the net, with Curtin making five saves, while Shannon had seven.

Mandy Marston led all players in scoring with four goals, while Leah Warner and Kathryn Merrick finished with three each. Merrick also had a game high two assists. Leanne Bittner played all 60 minutes between the pipes, making 13 saves, and allowing three goals.

The teams split in draw controls, 10-10, while Stevenson led in shots (33-23) and ground balls (25-14).

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 6th as they face off against #14 Mary Washington University in Orlando, FL. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
