Roanoke Blanks Hampden-Sydney, 2-0

Salem, Va. --- The Roanoke defense put up another shutout victory against Hampden-Sydney, 2-0 at Kerr Stadium this afternoon. The Maroons are now 10-3-1 with a 6-1 mark in the ODAC while the Tigers dropped to 8-5-1, 4-2 in the conference.
The Roanoke defensive unit led by team captain Michael Walter, Michael Stark, Ben Freeman and Cameron Lee have put up five-straight shutouts and six of their last seven outings. The Maroons are ranked #12 nationally in goals against average and 22nd in shutout percentage.
The 10-3-1 start is the best since 2002 (11-3) and the nine total shutouts are the most since 2001 (10). The five-straight shutouts ties the 1993 and 1968 teams for the second-most consecutive shutouts in school-history. The record is held by the 1984 team with six. Only the 1993 and 1998 teams have more shutouts in a season with 14 and 12, respectively.
The Maroons, who are ranked #7 in the NSCAA South Region Poll, are now 19-9-2 in the series against HSC and avenged last season's 4-1 loss in Farmville, Va. The win marks the seventh win in nine games against teams ranked in the NSCAA Regional polls (7-1-1).
Kayvon Sarmadi led the Maroons with a goal and an assist on the afternoon. Shaman Douglass scored his sixth goal of the season to lead Roanoke to their sixth ODAC win.
Sarmadi scored with four minutes remaining in the first half off a cross from Chris Collins for his third goal of the season. Collins was credited with his second assist of the season as the Maroons went into the half with a 1-0 advantage.
Sarmadi found Doulgass inside the box as he scored off an acrobatic shot that found the back of the net to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead at the 75-minute mark.
Adam Thompson earned the win in goal for the Maroons with his eighth shutout effort of the season. His eight shutouts are ranked fifth in a single-season at Roanoke and his 10 career shutouts rank him fifth all-time.
The men will host Guilford College in their final home match of the regular season. The Maroons are 20-4-1 in the series against the Quakers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
