Roanoke gets in win column against Methodist, 3-1

Salem, Va. --- The Roanoke College women's soccer team defeated Methodist, 3-1 in the ODAC/USA-South Challenge this evening. The Maroons improved to 1-2 on the season while the Monarchs dropped to 0-1. The women have won the last four meetings over Methodist.
The score equaled last season's NCAA First Round match as they defeated the Monarchs, 3-1 last fall for the Maroons' first-ever NCAA postseason win. Roanoke dominated the entire game, outshooting Methodist, 15-5.
Margaret Houston got the Maroons on the board for the first time this season as she netted her 23rd career goal to put them up, 1-0 early in the first half. Senior Meredith Grunewald was credited with the assist.
With 11 minutes remaining in the half, Methodist forward Danielle Minichello scored the equalizer to make it, 1-1.
With less than five seconds remaining in the half, Grunewald scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Sara Farmer to send Roanoke in the half with a 2-1 advantage.
With 30 minutes remaining in the match, senior Kristen McCoy scored off Grunewald's second assist to give the Maroons an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead. Grunewald is now tied for second all-time in career assists and needs two more to break the school-record. McCoy's goal ties her for second all-time in career goals with 41. She is also now tied for fifth all-time in career points at Roanoke.
Lindsay Kooiman had four saves in her first career win for the Maroons. Kasey Nichols finished with seven saves for the Monarchs.
The women return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 as they take on nearby Ferrum College at Kerr Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. The Maroons are 8-0-1 against the Panthers all-time.
