Maroons fall 1-0 to Meredith in Roanoke Invitational

Salem, Va. --- Despite a 16-4 advantage on shots, the Maroons fell to Meredith, 1-0 in the second game of the Roanoke Invitational Friday evening. The women will take on Oneonta State (0-1) in the consolation game while the Angels will advance to the championship game against Johns Hopkins (1-0).
Meredith (1-0) scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute, as Kristy Knight scored off a corner kick, which curved into the top of the net for her first game-winner of the season. The Angels now own a 2-1 advantage against Roanoke all-time, avenging last year's 2-1 defeat by the Maroons.
The Maroons (0-1) had several chances to get the equalizer, but couldn't convert. Gina Valles almost scored off a header, which hit the cross bar and almost crossed the line midway through the second half.
Ten minutes later, Kristen McCoy had a second opportunity as she was fouled in the box, forcing a penalty kick. Meredith's goalkeeper Sarah Chadwick prevented McCoy to tie the game with a diving save to help preserve her first shutout of the season.
McCoy, who picked up a yellow card along with Meredith Grunewald, wound up with six shots, three on goal for Roanoke. Sophomores McKenzie Garst and Jessica Welfare had three shots, two on goal as the Maroons had a 10-3 advantage on shots on goal.
Roanoke had a 15-3 advantage in corner kicks. Each team had nine fouls apiece in the contest.
Chadwick finished with 10 saves for Meredith while sophomore Lindsay Kooiman had two in her first start of her career.
The Maroons will play Oneonta St. at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the consolation game followed by Johns Hopkins/Meredith match for the Roanoke Invitational Championship at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting against the Red Dragons.
