Welfare Leads Maroons to First Win of the Season
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) scored both goals in Roanoke's 2-0 victory over Maryville (TN) in the Shellenberger Classic on the campus of Lynchburg College Saturday evening. The Maroons earn their first win of the season as they are now, 1-2-1 on the season. The Scots dropped to 1-2 as the Maroons improved to 8-1 against their opponent, including their third-straight win in the series.
Welfare, a three-time NSCAA All-South Region selection and team captain, scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth-minute off a corner kick from Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) for her first goal of the season.
Her second came off a header from another corner in the 89th minute, this time from fellow senior McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) for her first assist of the year.
Roanoke dominated on paper in both shots (23-13) and 10-2 in corner kicks. The Maroons outshot Maryville, 16-6, in addition to a 7-1 corner kicks edge in the second half.
Adams, Garst and Sarah Bradley had four shots, three shots on goal apiece to lead the Maroons offensive attack.
Deseree Simmons totaled 13 saves for the Scots. Lindsay Kooiman had five saves, including two from point-blank range. Jamie Johnston was credited with a team save as she cleared a ball in an open goal situation as the defense earned their first shutout effort of the year.
Roanoke returns to action on Sunday as the women take on Salisbury (MD) in the final day of the Shellenberger Classic. The match is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
