Women's Soccer Gets Big Win Against In State Rival CNU, 4-1
SALEM, Va--- Roanoke topped Christopher Newport, 4-1 in South Region action Sunday at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improved to 4-3-1, 1-0 in the conference, while the Captains fell to 3-3 on the year.
The win was Roanoke's largest margin of victory ever against Christopher Newport and tied the all-time series at 4-4. The women have outscored their opponents 12-0 in their past two contests.
Sarah Bradley (Richmond, VA, Deep Run), Jamie Johnston (Wallingford, PA, Strath Haven ), and Kara Kapell (Trumbull, CT, Trumbull) all scored their first collegiate goals against the Captains in the Maroons second straight win.
Bradley got the scoring started on a cross from Cindy Suttora (Long Island, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Academy) in the fifth minute. Johnston added a score 10 minutes later and Brianna Quintiliani (Norwood, MA, Norwood) found Kapell off a cross in the 40th minute to send the Maroons into the intermission leading 3-0.
In the 52nd minute, Bradley crossed a pass into the box to Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) who punched in her team-leading fifth goal of the season. AnneMarie Weaver spoiled the shut-out on an unassisted goal with just two minutes to play.
The Maroons outshot the Captains 13-1, and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Roanoke is currently outshooting their opponents 151-77 on the year.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)earned her fourth victory in goal for the Maroons. Kristyn Brogan (Cloverdale, VA, Lord Botetourt) relieved her with 18 minutes remaining and picked up her first save of the season. Meghan Gumbs took the loss for the Captains.
The Maroons return to action Tuesday, September 21st when they travel to across town to face Hollins University. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
