ROANOKE, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Hollins, 4-0 in ODAC action Tuesday afternoon in the cross-town showdown. The Maroons improved to 5-3-1, 2-0 in the ODAC while Hollins dropped to 3-4, 0-2 in conference play.
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) scored two of the four Maroon goals as Roanoke won its 27th-straight game against their opponent. McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) had a goal and an assist to lift the women to their third-straight win.
The Maroons outshot Hollins, 26-11 as Hollins held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Welfare got the scoring underway in the fifth-minute off a corner from Sarah Bradley (Richmond, VA, Deep Run) to take the early lead. It was Bradley's team-high fourth assist of the season.
The Maroons didn't put their opponent away until the 71st minute, as Garst found Welfare for her third assist of the year to go up, 2-0.
Garst found the back of the net in the 79th minute off an assist from Kara Kapell (Trumbull, CT, Trumbull) to make the score, 3-0. It was helper of her young career. Katelyn LePore (Troutville, VA, Lord Botetourt) scored the final goal off assists from both Alaina Casioppo (Canton, CT, Canton) and Maggie Dent (Roanoke, VA, Patrick Henry).
Kristen Norkus finished with 11 saves for Hollins. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View) earned her fourth shutout victory of the season, collecting three saves.
The women will take on ODAC-foe Bridgewater on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are 14-3 against the Eagles. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
