Women's Soccer Opens Season Undefeated at Shellenberger Classic
LYNCHBURG --- Roanoke Women's Soccer collected a pair of wins at the 2011 Shellenberger Classic this weekend to open the season. The Maroons (2-0) defeated Birmingham-Southern, 2-1 Saturday and blanked Sewanee, 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Sarah Valero (Staten Island, NY, Staten Island Academy) started her career in impressive fashion, scoring a goal in both contests. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristyn Brogan (Cloverdale, VA, Lord Botetourt) had a great weekend between the posts, collecting 10 saves in her first two starts of her career.
Cindy Suttora (Long Island, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Academy) scored her first goal of the season in the first half off an assist from Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield), her second of the weekend, to give the women a 1-0 halftime lead. Valero's goal in the second half secured the victory over the Tigers as the Maroons possessed the ball for most of the contest.
Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Adams with four minutes remaining to give the Maroons a 2-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern Saturday afternoon.
Valero scored her first collegiate goal in the first half for the Maroons, while Brogan collected seven saves, including three in the waning minutes of play.
The women will host the 2011 Roanoke College Invitational this weekend, Sept. 10-11. The Maroons will open up with #5 Emory Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
