Roanoke Tops #10 Virginia Wesleyan in Overtime, 1-0 on Parents Weekend
SALEM --- Kara Kapell (Trumbull, CT, Trumbull) scored her second goal of the season six minutes in overtime to give Roanoke a 1-0 victory over #10 Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improve to 8-2-1 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC. The Marlins fall to 10-1, 3-1 in conference play.

The win was a historic one, as it was the first against a top-10 team in history of the women's soccer program at Roanoke College. Roanoke received votes for the third time this season in the NSCAA Div. III Top-25 Poll.

After a physical 90 minutes of action, the contest was sent into overtime where Kapell scored her first career game-winner. After Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)shot was blocked by a Virginia Wesleyan defender, the ball fell in front of Kapell as she booted it past the goalkeeper to the right side to give the Marlins their first loss of the season.

Roanoke, which is 13-16-2 against Virginia Wesleyan, has won the last two regular season meetings. It also was redemption for the Maroons as VWC ended their season in last fall's ODAC Semifinals. The win also got RC back on track after dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Washington and Lee on Wednesday.

VWC outshot RC, 8-5 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Carolyn Sarbacher (Dunkirk, MD, Northern) collected three saves in goal for Roanoke. Erica Keil had one save for the Marlins.

The women will host Emory & Henry on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in ODAC action. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
