Barnard Goal Gives Roanoke 1-0 Win over Averett
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's soccer team defeated Averett University on Friday night, 1-0 in Kerr Stadium.  The Maroons now have a record of 2-1, while the Cougars sit with a mark of 1-2.

Having only played Averett twice now, the Maroons have a 1-1 record against the Cougars.  The two teams last played in 2012, where Averett won, 1-0.

Neither the Maroons nor the Cougars could find the back of the net in the first half.  Roanoke had a couple opportunities though, as in the first moments of the game Lauren O'Brien took a free kick from just outside the box that bounced off of the crossbar.  After the first 45 minutes, the game remained tied at 0-0.

It wasn't until the 64th minute of the contest when Marlana Barnard took an off-balance shot that was placed right over the head of Averett's goalkeeper.  With Barnard's goal, Roanoke took a 1-0 lead that held for the remainder of the contest.

The Maroons were led in shots by Barnard, who tallied four.  She was followed by Lauren O'Brien with three and Linnea Kremer with two.  Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in net and tallied three saves.

For Averett, Sandra Johansson led the team in shots with two, followed by Charlotte Thibault, Camilla Sjoren, Jennie Nilsson and Emma Brady with one each.  Malin Borjesson played 73 minutes in goal and tallied two saves, giving up one goal.

Roanoke led Averett in total shots, 14-6, holding the Cougars to just two in the second half.  The Maroons also held the advantage in corner kicks.  Neither team had a corner kick in the first half, and Roanoke had a 4-0 advantage in the second half.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, September 8th as they travel to play Franklin and Marshall.  That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
