Maroons Post Fourth Straight Shutout, Defeat Marlins 2-0
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's soccer team won its fourth straight game, defeating Virginia Wesleyan, 2-0 at Kerr Stadium on Saturday.  The Maroons now have a record of 6-6-1; 4-3 in ODAC play, while the Marlins now sit with a mark of 7-4-2; 4-3 in the ODAC.

The Maroons' current four game win streak comes with four shutouts, thanks to Roanoke's shutdown defense.  Roanoke has only allowed 23 shots in the last four games combined, compared to the 81 shots the Maroons have taken.  On the offensive side of the ball, Roanoke has outscored its opponents 17-0 in the last four games.

The Maroons put up the first goal of the game as Abbe Gaurino scored off of a deflected save.  Marlana Barnard took a hard shot at the goalkeeper that bounced right to the foot of Guarino, as the Maroons took the 1-0 lead.

The Maroons found the back of the net once more in the second half.  Lauren O'Brien fired a corner kick into a mix of Maroons and Marlins, finding the head of Ashley Barnes for the goal.  This is Barnes' fifth goal in the last two games, as well as O'Brien's fourth assist.  This would be the final goal of the contest as Roanoke picked up the 2-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins held the shot advantage over the Maroons, 9-6.  Marlana Barnard led the team in shots with two, followed by Barnes, Kara Kapell, Courtney Yoke and Abbe Guarino with one shot each.  Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied seven saves.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, October 17th as they play host to Emory & Henry at Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
