Barnes' Late Goal Seals 2-1 Victory Over Southern Virginia
LYNCHBURG – Junior Ashley Barnes put away the game winner for Roanoke with 16 seconds to play in the Maroons' 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia in the Shellenberger Classic.  The Maroons finish the weekend with a record of 2-0, while the Knights sit with a record of 0-2.

With Roanoke's two victories over the weekend, Roanoke starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2011.

Southern Virginia pushed the pace early in the contest getting off two shots in the first nine minutes.  The second of the Knights' two shots found the back of the net, as Tatiana Monsen lobbed a ball over the keeper giving Southern Virginia the early 1-0 lead.  The Maroons held advantage for the majority of the first half, outshooting the Knights 14-4 after the first goal was scored.  However, the Maroons didn't find the back of the net in the first, trailing 1-0 at the end of 45.

The scoring drought continued for the Maroons through the early portion of the second half until the 66th minute.  Courtney Yoke scored the equalizer at 66:23 after fielding a pass from Adelyn Fitzgerald.  Yoke scored her first goal of the season, while Fitzgerald got her first assist of the year.  The game looked as though it would go into overtime until Barnes finished a cross from Abbe Guarino with just 16 seconds left to play.  The Maroons held off the Knights for the remaining time, picking up the 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia.

Marlana Barnard led the Maroons in shots, firing off eight on the afternoon.  Courtney Yoke followed suit with six shots, while Ashley Barnes and Kirstin Figel took four each.  Sarah Dvorak played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied two saves.

Sierra Sorenson, Kora Jewell and Tatiana Monsen each fired off two shots during the contest, while Haylee Grimer finished with one.  Mackenzie Cox and Autum Cox split time in the goal, with Mackenzie tallying six saves.

The Maroons outshot Southern Virginia 32-7, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks 6-2.  Roanoke has posted 30 or more shots in both games in the Classic, taking 37 shots in the 7-0 win on Friday.

The Maroons will host the Roanoke Invitational on September 6-7.  Roanoke will take on Franklin and Marshall at 5:00 PM on Saturday, then go on to play Johns Hopkins at 5:00 PM on Sunday.
