Maroons Defeat Diplomats 1-0 in Double Overtime
SALEM- The Roanoke College women's soccer team defeated Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in the first game of the Roanoke invitational on Saturday night.  The Maroons are now 3-0 on the season, while the Diplomats sit at 1-2.
 
The Maroons held off the Diplomats in the first half keeping the score 0-0 after 45 minutes of play.  Roanoke led the half in shot attempts putting up six total.  Franklin & Marshall's, Caroline Letner tabbed 4 saves while the Maroons defense played strong throughout allowing only 3 shot attempts by half. 
 
The back and forth game continued throughout the second half.  The Maroons kept the lead with shots taken with five after the half, while Franklin & Marshall wasn't far behind with four.  Roanoke's Caroline Sarbacher start the second half and recorded one save.  Ashley Barnes had five shots with one on goal.  The second half ended with a score of 0-0 forcing overtime. 
 
The score remained 0-0 at the conclusion of the first over time.  Ashley Barnes had a shot on goal in the last ten seconds but was stopped by Franklin & Marshall's goalkeeper, Caroline Letner causing the competition to continue into a second overtime. 
 
In the start of the second over time Franklin & Marshall had a quick shot on goal in the first thirty seconds but was stopped by Sarbacher.  The Maroons answered back strong with the game winning goal by Ashley Barnes just a little over two minutes into the second overtime. 
 
The only goal of the game came after a total of thirteen shots by the Maroons.  Barnes lead the team with seven shots, three on goal.  Manning, Barnard, Kremer, Yoke, Johnson, and Fitzgerald each contributed one shot throughout the game. Sarbacher had two saves on the day. As for the Diplomats, Spencer Plante led the team with four shots, followed by Mischianti , Reid, Irvin, and Kornbluth who each had one shot.  Letner ended the day with six saves and one goal allowed that came in the second overtime. 
 
Roanoke had a total of thirteen shots with seven being on goal.  Franklin & Marshall had eight shots with only two being on goal.  The Maroons had four corner kicks while the Diplomats had two.
 
 
The Maroons are back in action tomorrow, Sunday Sept 7th.  They will take the field at 5pm to take on the John Hopkins Blue Jays in their second game of the Roanoke Invitational.
