The Lead: Madison Atkins' golden goal in the 106th minute lifted visiting Virginia Wesleyan to a 1-0 overtime victory over Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
- Regulation featured a back and forth contest with VWC holding a slim 8-5 lead in shots in the first 90 minutes.
- The best chance RC had to score came just three minutes in when Emily Whitaker lofted a left-footed shot that was out of the reach of the goalkeeper but hit the cross bar and stayed out of the net.
- Following the first overtime, VWC scored the game-winner when Brittany Wentzel played a ball from the midfield that Atkins was able to get to before RC keeper Sarah Dvorak who was charging and chip it into the goal.
- VWC finished the match with a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
- Dvorak made six stops in net for RC, while Megan Gerhart made three stops in VWC shutout.
Roanoke will be back in action when it hosts Emory & Henry at 7:00 p.m. in an ODAC match.
