Roanoke Goes 2-2 in 2009 Maroon Classic
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke split four matches in the 2009 Maroon Classic this weekend at the Bast Center. They defeated both Randolph and Ferrum, 3-0 on Friday but fell to Southern Virginia, 3-2 and to ODAC-foe Emory & Henry, 3-0 in the final match.
Roanoke, who now stand at 2-3 on the season, were paced by Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who totaled 90 assists, 11 digs and four blocks in four games. She was named to the 2009 Maroon Classic All-Tournament Team. Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 37 kills and eight service aces to lead Roanoke while Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)had a team-best 40 kills and 15 digs in the tournament. Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)and Morgan Grant (Abingdon, VA, Abingdon)finished the weekend with eight blocks each. Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)and Lindsay Wright (Vail, CO, Vail )finished with a combined total of 50 digs
Randolph was the first opponent and the women defeated the Wildcats in straight sets 25-8, 25-14 and 25-19. Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA)led the Maroons with four kills and 12 assists while Long added nine assists. In the second match of the evening they defeated Ferrum, again in straight sets 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20. Long led the Maroons with four kills, 20 assists and six digs while Wagner and Largen added a combined total of 19 kills to pace the Maroons. Junior Martin finished the match with eight digs.
The Maroons fell in scores of 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 22-25 and 11-15 to Southern Virginia University for the second time this season. The Maroons were paced by Largen with a season-best 18 kills and five digs while Long dished out a season-high of 37 assists. Wagner contributed 13 kills, three aces and seven digs. Martin had four aces and a season-best 13 digs.
In the final game, the Maroons were swept by Emory & Henry, with scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14. Wagner and Largen had 10 kills each while Long finished with 24 assists. Martin also finished with eight digs in the match.
The women will travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, Sept. 9 to take on Greensboro. The Maroons are 5-23 against the Pride winning the last three meetings. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
