Roanoke Split Pair of Games in Final Day of Averett Invitational
DANVILLE, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1 but defeated Greensboro to split in the final day of the Sixth Annual Averett Invitational Saturday. The Maroons record now stands at 11-12. Following the tournament, Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)was named to the Averett Invitational All-Tournament team.
Roanoke fell to Virginia Wesleyan in four sets with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 21-25 and 22-25. The Maroons are 0-2 against the Marlins this season.
Wagner led Roanoke with 13 kills and 24 digs. Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)had 12 kills and 12 digs while Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)totaled 10 kills, seven digs, two aces and four blocks (two solo).
Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 38 assists, eight digs and two block assists. Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)had 24 digs in the loss.
In the final match of the weekend, the Maroons defeated Greensboro in three sets for the second time this season. They won with scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16. It was the fifth-straight win over The Pride.
Largen led Roanoke with 12 kills along with five digs and two block assists. Wagner had eight kills, eight digs and three blocks (one solo). Ferris added seven kills and five blocks (two solo) to pace the Maroons.
Long totaled 30 assists, eight digs and three kills. Martin had 15 digs to lead the Maroons to their 11th win of the season. Martin's 854 career digs are 16 shy of passing Susan Brown '95 for fourth all-time at Roanoke.
Wagner has 514 career kills, four shy from passing former player and current head coach Blair Calvert Trail ‘99 for 10th all-time. Ferris is now tied with Ashley Sweet '96 for ninth in career block assists with 84. She is one block shy of tying Maria DiSanto '99 for 10th all-time in total blocks (153).
Long's 1,082 career assists are three shy of passing Kelly Valoris '03 for fifth all-time at Roanoke. After this weekend, Long, who is the school's record-holder in career digs with 1,596, is now ranked fifth in ODAC History.
Roanoke will return home this Thursday, Oct. 15 as the Maroons will take on Mary Baldwin at the Bast Center. The women are 24-0 against the Squirrels. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
