Roanoke Closes Out Maroon Classic; Hedgpeth Named All-Tournament

The Lead: Meagan Smith had a game-high 10 kills as the Maroons defeated Ferrum on Saturday in game one. 

How it Happened: 

  • Ryan Hedgpeth had 21 digs and five aces while Christen Zammit had 20 assists and 12 digs.
  • In the first set, Roanoke used an 8-0 run highlighted with back-to-back kills from Smith to take a 20-11 lead.
  • The Maroons broke away from an 11-11 tie in the second set, winning the next six straight points sparked by a kill from Kylah Blackmore.
  • The Panthers brought it within one at the 19-18 mark, but Hedgpeth recorded two consecutive aces to make it 23-18.
  • Trailing 5-3 in the final set, Hedgepeth served three straight aces followed by a kill from Sydney Daniel to take the lead for good at the 9-6 mark.

The Lead: Roanoke fell in five sets to Salem in the final game of the Maroon Classic.

How it Happened:

  • After dropping the first set, RC took an early 10-3 lead in the second set capped by a kill by Alex Wolfe. Roanoke then used a 6-1 run to take the set and even the match at 1-1.
  • With the score 10-8 in set three, Roanoke won the next five points headed by Christen Zammit with a pair of aces to take extend the lead to 15-8.
  • Trailing 2-1, Salem took control in the fourth set with an early 10-3 lead before going on to take the set and even the match.
  • In the fifth set that saw six ties, Salem broke away winning four of the final five points capped by a kill by Madelyn Chappell.
  • Kylah Blackmore recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 17 digs while Meagan Smith joined her in double digits with 13 kills. Ryan Hedgpeth had 24 digs while Zammit dished out 23 assists and Emerson Kern tallied 21.
  • The Pride was led by Taylor Moulton with 16 kills and 22 digs.
