Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle with W&L

The Basics

The Lead: Roanoke fell in a five-set battle to Washington and Lee Monday night in ODAC Volleyball. 

How it Happened: 

  • In the fifth and deciding set, Washington and Lee used a 9-3 run to break away in the final set, finished by a kill from Meg Guigon.  Roanoke brought it within two highlighted by two straight aces from Kelsey Goodman.
  • The Generals took the lead at 11-8 following a long rally, capped by a kill from Lindy Gearon, before taking the set to win the match.
  • In the first set, Washington and Lee broke away from an 11-11 tie with a 4-0 run to take the lead at 15-11. The Maroons responded with a 4-0 run of their own to even the set at 15-15 after a kill from Goodman.
  • Roanoke trailed 18-16 in set one before winning six of the next seven points, capped by a kill from Sydney Daniel, to take the final lead at 22-19.
  • In a second set that saw 17 ties of back and forth scoring, the Generals broke away from a 21-21 game, winning four of the last five points to take the set and even the match.
  • Roanoke tied the fourth set 20-20 following a block from Angel Ross. Ross and Olivia Newman combined for a block three points later to take a 22-21 advantage.
  • Newman, Linsey Bailey and Ross all recorded kills for RC's final three points of the fourth set to secure the set win.
  • The Generals jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set following a pair of aces. Later in the set, W&L used a 7-1 run to extend the advantage to 15-7 to force the fifth set.
  • Bailey recorded a career-high 21 kills and 23 digs while Daniel added 16 kills of her own with 14 digs. Newman tied a career-high 45 assists on the night.
  • W&L was led by Allison Webb with 23 kills and Elly Cosgrove with 32 digs. 

Up Next: Roanoke returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 2 for a 7 p.m. match up with Randolph in Salem. Before the start of the match seniors Kelsey Goodman and Sydney Daniel will be recognized for their careers as Maroons.
